MEET JO.LIU

Designer and Founder of ALIBI NYC, Jo Liu graduated from New York University with a degree in Psychology and Economics. While at university Jo spent a year studying abroad in Florence, Italy. It was there she discovered her passion for art and fashion. Shortly thereafter, she started working for handbag company Suen-Cooper and became a full-time production coordinator after graduation. She often travelled to Italy for business, while there she observed a multitude of designers and worked with numerous artisans at their studios. Interacting with such creative minds inspired Jo to pursue her future in fashion.

In order to chase her dream, she enrolled at Parsons School of Design to major in fashion studies. While at Parsons, Jo began an internship at fashion company Jen Kao, as well as working as a production assistant at Tina Tang Jewelry where she learned the basics of jewelry making. Infusing her personal style with what she learned, she soon began to experiment with her own designs.

After graduating from Parsons, Jo continued working for Jen Kao as an assistant designer while pursuing jewelry design and sold her work online and at markets. After 2 years as an apparel designer and wanting to further her passion for jewelry, Jo started to study with jeweler Kristin Hanson. With Kristin she learned an abundance of new techniques, as well as improving upon her skills as a designer and craftswoman. She loved the hands-on process that each piece of jewelry requires, the carving, soldering, stone setting, and more. With each piece she created, Jo also tested new techniques and ideas. It was through this experimentation where she began to develop her own style and unique look. Some of her most innovative designs are her body-garment jewelry, hinge rings, and statement ear-cuffs. In 2011, Jo took the final leap and opened her own jewelry studio. Her first collection launched later that year. Alibi by Jo Liu's Linear Knuckle Ring from her first collection has become her signature piece and best selling item to date.
