ALIBI NYC

ALIBI NYC began with a love of jewelry and has grown into a collection of small luxuries for the home, body, and everyday life.

From small-batch candles and home fragrance to body care and jewelry, each piece is thoughtfully designed with an appreciation for beautiful materials, unexpected details, and the simple pleasure of something made well.

We believe what goes into a product matters just as much as how it looks. We seek out premium raw materials and, whenever possible, choose organic, natural, and more environmentally conscious ingredients and materials. Many of our pieces are handmade or produced in small batches, and we work with makers and suppliers we trust to bring them to life.

ALIBI is intentionally small. Everything is designed, developed, and thoughtfully sourced by Jo Liu in New York, with a focus on creating pieces that feel special without feeling precious.

A good candle, a favorite piece of jewelry, a beautifully scented room, a little something that makes an ordinary day feel a bit more special — we believe these small luxuries have a place in everyday life.

Small luxuries, thoughtfully made.

MEET JO.LIU

Long before ALIBI became what it is today, Jo Liu was simply drawn to making things.

While studying Psychology and Economics at New York University, Jo spent a year in Florence, Italy. Surrounded by art, fashion, and centuries of craftsmanship, she began to see design in a different way. That experience eventually led her into the fashion industry, where she worked in production and traveled to Italy, spending time with designers and artisans and becoming fascinated by the process behind the finished product.

Wanting to pursue design more seriously, Jo went on to study fashion at Parsons School of Design in New York. While there, she began exploring jewelry and later continued working in fashion while developing her own designs.

Her interest in jewelry eventually led her to study with master jeweler Kristin Hanson, where she developed her skills in the hands-on craft of jewelry making — carving, soldering, stone setting, and experimenting with materials and form. She loved the process as much as the finished piece, and that curiosity became the foundation for her own work.

In 2011, Jo opened her own jewelry studio and launched her first collection as Alibi by Jo Liu. Her Linear Knuckle Ring became a signature piece, and the collection went on to be featured in publications including Vogue, ELLE, Harper's Bazaar, and Nylon, as well as worn by artists and actors including Solange Knowles, Janelle Monáe, FKA twigs, and Elisabeth Moss.

Over time, Jo's curiosity naturally expanded beyond jewelry. Candle making began as a personal interest and grew into a collection of home fragrance, particularly during 2020 when home became the center of everyday life. From there came skincare, body care, and a broader exploration of the small luxuries that make everyday spaces and routines feel a little more special.

Today, Jo continues to design and develop ALIBI from New York, bringing together her love of materials, craftsmanship, fragrance, and design — and still very much enjoying the process of making something from an idea into something you can hold, wear, burn, or use.
